DRIFT
Unfold, 2025
Biometric sensors, Projection, Wooden Chair, Speakers, Computer
Size: 2,5 x 2,5 x 3,2m

A collaboration between DRIFT and SCAD, Unfold is an immersive installation that transforms the human body's rhythmic data into a unique audio-visual experience. Upon entry, visitors' heartbeats are measured in real-time, serving as the foundation for shaping the surrounding experience.

Drawing inspiration from the local botanical world, the visuals manifest a dynamic, character-driven floral form. The body's rhythm is translated through AI into unique floral patterns, each tailored to the visitor's beats per minute (BPM). This connection between biological data and digital design creates a one-of-a-kind visual experience, where each interaction becomes a personal reflection of the individual in that precise moment.

The participant is guided through a personalized natural growth visualization and audio score into an altered state of mind creating a connection between their body and the world around them. Using digital content to realign us to our physical world, Unfold is an exploration of the self, where the pulse of life manifests through the ephemeral beauty of flora—an invitation to delve deeper into the symbiotic dance between the body and nature.

Conceived and produced specifically for the Goat Tower of SCAD Lacoste, Unfold embodies DRIFT's core intention to craft immersive environments in which the audience is surrounded with natural rhythms created by the light and movement.

These soothing rhythms encourage visitors to synchronize their breathing and heartbeat with the pulse of their surroundings, offering an opportunity to rediscover and, ideally, reconnect with both the environment and their inner selves

BIO

DRIFT
Dutch artists Lonneke Gordijn (1980) and Ralph Nauta (1978) founded studio DRIFT in 2007. With a multidisciplinary team of 40, they work on experiential sculptures, installations and performances. DRIFT manifests the phenomena and hidden properties of nature with the use of technology in order to learn from the Earth's underlying mechanisms, and to re-establish our connection to it.

DRIFT has realised numerous exhibitions and (public) projects around the world. Their work has been exhibited at Milwaukee Art Museum (2025), LUMA Foundation (2024), Central Park New York (2023), Centre Pompidou (2022), The Shed NYC (2021); Stedelijk Museum (2018); Art Basel (2017, 2021) Victoria & Albert Museum (2009, 2015); UTA Artist Space (2019) amongst others. The art duo is represented by PACE Gallery, Carpenters Workshop Gallery and Creative Artists Agency (CAA).

DRIFT will open a 8000 m2 museum dedicated to their work and vision, in a historic and climate neutral renovated building in Amsterdam, by the end of 2025. For DRIFT, establishing a museum has been a long-term dream. To create a visionary space in which their large-scale installations converge in their full potential in the way that the artists intended for them to be experienced, pushing the limits of creativity and scale. DRIFT envisions this museum as a catalyst for innovation, where different generations will explore and reflect on the relationship between humanity, the environment and technology through immersive installations - fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of/for the world.
